Kate Winslet Says She Was “Terrified” After Her Privacy Was Violated
Titanic’s protagonist, Rose DeWitt Bukater, is still considered one of Kate Winslet’s most iconic roles. However, it was also responsible for a very traumatic time in her life. Starring in the film alongside Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson made Winslet an overnight sensation. The quick transition to fame gave no time to prepare for the pressures and risks that come with becoming a celebrity of her caliber. As her media presence increased, the public naturally became more interested in Winslet’s personal life. Adapting to the level of scrutiny she experienced was already hard enough, but she also had to deal with being stalked by obsessive fans, which is incredibly dangerous, as many can take things too far. In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the actor recalled an especially disturbing incident with multiple fans. She said that her phone got tapped by several people after Titanic debuted and became one of the most iconic films of its time. Things got so out of control that Winslet was losing sleep over it, and it didn’t help that she lived alone at the time. “There were people tapping my phone. They were just everywhere. And I was just on my own. I was terrified to go to sleep,” she explained. The actor mentioned that she even had followers who were digging through her trash to see what she ate. She said that it was disturbing how far they would go just to “try and figure out what diet I was on or wasn’t on.” This added another layer of fear to the situation because now people knew where she lived, and going through her garbage was the least of what they could potentially do to her. The obsessive fans weren’t the only ones who affected her negatively when it came to fame. The added media attention also came with a lot of people who didn’t like her, including members of the press. Winslet revealed how cruel some of the outlets that wrote about her could be. She said that they were publishing horrible things about her when they didn’t even know her and calling her “awful, terrible, actually abusive names.”
Winslet did offer some advice for people who wanted to get into the entertainment industry. She stated that having a close circle of people whom you trust around you was a great help. She also told people that the best thing you can do is to just ignore the negativity. And, most importantly, for people who have children, be careful while they’re out in public and make sure to pay attention to their surroundings. “You just keep your mouth closed, you put your head down, and you keep walking. And you try and put your hands over your children’s ears. You lean on your friends, you just keep going.”
