Marvel Just Quietly Teased 2 Major Details About Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom
In an unexpected development, Marvel Studios has teased some major details about Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom ahead of his proper debut in Avengers: Doomsday. We’ve known the longtime Iron Man actor would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one of Marvel’s biggest villains since 2024, but specifics on his appearance, backstory, powers, and more have yet to be fully revealed. That’s starting to change as the Doomsday marketing campaign kicks off. In addition to officially releasing a Steve Rogers-focused trailer, Marvel also debuted the first official Avengers: Doomsday poster.
It might not seem like that exciting of a poster at first glance, with it following the franchise’s tradition of using the Avengers “A” set against a movie-specific background. But the finer details appear to be teasing new revelations about Doctor Doom.

One of the most striking parts of the poster is the stained-glass window look of the background. This isn’t a direct match for anything previously seen in the MCU, such as the Citadel at the End of Time. The likely answer is that this is a glimpse of the windows of Doom’s castle. Known in the comics as Castle Doom, this is a signature location for Doom and his empire in Latveria. The castle is often depicted as having a medieval design and is the primary place where the Marvel villain does his scheming. It would make sense for Castle Doom to be the background of the Doomsday poster, given his prominent role in the film. It was expected, but not confirmed, that we’d see a version of Doom’s castle in Doomsday. While its presence is still not official, the tease of it in the marketing increases the likelihood. Just how much of Castle Doom the movie does include remains to be seen, especially with a presumed universe-hopping story. While it’s impossible to miss the stained-glass window effect of the poster, the bottom right corner contains another intriguing tease for Doom. The stone-like texture has carvings of strange shapes that eerily resemble magic runes.
The runes in the Doomsday poster don’t match any of the magic runes the MCU has previously used in projects like WandaVision or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But the overall look and feel of them is similar. It’d be strange for Marvel to include random markings on the poster, knowing people will dissect every pixel of it. Doom is known for his ability to combine magic and science. It’s always been assumed that Robert Downey Jr.’s version of the character would lean into this element and have him be a fully-equipped magic-user. While the full display of his magic powers are still under wraps, Avengers: Doomsday is planting the seeds for that eventuality.
