‘The Consultant’ (2023)
Image via Prime Video
A thriller series created by Tony Basgallop and based on the novel by Bentley Little, The Consultant stars Christoph Waltz as Regus Patoff, a creepy, ruthless consultant who arrives at CompWare, a mobile gaming company, after its CEO is suddenly murdered. As Regus begins to impose absurd, even harsh demands, pitting the staff against each other to make the company “more efficient,” two employees grow increasingly suspicious of his motives and resolve to find the truth. Besides Waltz, the show stars Nat Wolff, Brittany O’Grady, and Aimee Carrero in other main roles. With themes of corporate culture, corruption, and employee exploitation, The Consultant is a tense thriller that leans more towards absurd, dark comedy. Though the story opens with a lot of potential with intriguing twists and well-staged plots, its slow pace and lack of resolution at the end made it a difficult and confusing watch for most viewers, which is why the show was so quickly forgotten after its release. However, though its plot may have its flaws, The Consultant is more than worth watching for Waltz’s ominous characterization and performance, which sees the iconic actor performing at his creepy best.

‘Three-Body’ (2023)
Wang Miao (Zhang Luyi), his body in shadow, staring out his apartment window and hallucinating a giant purple, blue, and white arm and hand reaching from the right to the left in the Chinese drama Three-BodyImage via Tencent Video
A Chinese sci-fi series directed by Yang Lei and Vincent Yang, Three-Body is the first television adaptation of Liu Cixin’s award-winning novel The Three-Body Problem, before Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. The plot, which sticks quite closely to the original novel, follows a leading nanotech specialist, Wang Miao, who is recruited by detective Shi Qiang to investigate a series of mysterious suicides among scientists, which leads them to encounter a mysterious extraterrestrial species and their impact on the future of humanity. The sci-fi thriller stars Zhang Luyi, Yu Hewei, Chen Jin, Wang Ziwen, Lin Yongjian, and Li Xiaoran in various roles. Presented through remarkable, astonishing visuals and the stories of diverse characters, Three-Body is a faithful adaptation of the original novel that does real justice to the depth and breadth of Cixin’s literary masterpiece. However, as complex as the time-bending galactic mystery is, the show’s slower pace and 30-episode length can be challenging for many, which is perhaps why the series quickly became obscure after its release. On its release, Three-Body was widely acclaimed in China and other territories for its visual effects, its faithfulness to the source material, and the performances of its cast.

‘The Rig’ (2023–Present)

A British supernatural thriller series created by David Macpherson and directed by John Strickland, The Rig takes place on a Scottish oil rig in the North Sea, which suddenly gets enveloped by a mysterious fog that prevents communication with the outside world and starts infecting the crew members. While investigating the phenomenon and diagnosing the victims, a scientist onboard the rig discovers an alien parasite unearthed from the ocean floor. The series stars Iain Glen, Emily Hampshire, Martin Compston, Mark Bonnar, and Mark Addy in main roles. The first Prime Video original to be shot entirely in Scotland, The Rig boasts brilliantly shot visuals with enough scary moments to keep fans engaged. A horror narrative about the consequences of persistent oil drilling on the environment, the series essentially ends up being an ecological thriller with strong supernatural elements. Running for two seasons, The Rig bears some resemblance to Stephen King’s Mist and has been praised for its overwhelming visuals and compelling performances, but it’s still not as widely known as it ought to be.

‘War & Peace’ (2016)

A British historical drama written by Andrew Davies and directed by Tom Harper, 2016’s War & Peace is a miniseries adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s 1869 novel. Set during the Napoleonic Wars between 1805 and 1820, the series follows several members of two Russian aristocratic families, focusing primarily on three characters, Pierre Bezukhov, Andrei Bolkonsky, and Natasha Rostova, and their spiritual quest as they navigate love, loss, and societal expectations, while seeking glory and searching for the meaning of life in times of upheaval. The show’s star-studded cast includes Paul Dano, Lily James, James Norton, Jessie Buckley, Callum Turner, Tom Burke, Jack Lowden, Brian Cox, and Gillian Anderson. While a six-part miniseries cannot capture the length, breadth, depth, and true essence of Tolstoy’s literary genius, BBC’s War & Peace offers a more comprehensible and accessible path to understanding the Russian classic. With sprawling visuals and lavish costumes, the historical drama is a feast for the eyes that truly raises the bar for period dramas. Though the show has been critically praised for its narrative style, which balances humor, heart, wit, and passion, the series sadly did not remain in the popular memory for long.

‘The Following’ (2013–2015)
Kevin Bacon as Ryan Hardy, looking surprised on ‘The Following’Image via Fox
From the creator of shows like Dawson’s Creek and The Vampire Diaries, Kevin Williamson, comes this psychological crime thriller starring Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy. The Following follows FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Bacon) on his unyielding pursuit of an escaped serial killer, Joe Carroll (Purefoy), who has assembled a dangerous cult of fanatical killers. Shawn Ashmore, Natalie Zea, Valorie Curry, Connie Nielsen, Tiffany Boone, and Michael Ealy star in other important roles in various seasons. The Following takes a dark and gritty approach to cult horror without forgoing familiar crime thriller tropes. The series has been praised for Kevin Bacon’s earnest performance, which won him a Saturn Award, as well as his chemistry with Purefoy, who is equally fantastic as the evil cult leader and killer. During its run, The Following was regarded as one of the most violent and terrifying crime thrillers on network television, but the show’s well-crafted storytelling and intense characters failed to stay with the audience for long after it was canceled, cutting the story short at just three seasons.

‘The Kettering Incident’ (2016)
Elizabeth Debicki as Anna Macy staring into the camera with a blank look in The Kettering Incident. Image via Showcase
An Australian sci-fi mystery drama thriller created by Victoria Madden and Vincent Sheehan, The Kettering Incident stars Elizabeth Debicki as Anna Macy, a teenager from Tasmania who leaves her hometown following the sudden disappearance of her best friend. When Anna returns home after 15 years and learns about another young girl disappearing the same way as her childhood friend, she sets out to solve the mystery that has been haunting her for almost as long as she can remember. Matthew Le Nevez, Henry Nixon, Damon Gameau, Damien Garvey, and Sacha Horler play other main roles. The Kettering Incident is an overwhelming combination of psychological and sci-fi thriller with gothic elements that bears heavy resemblance to Nordic noir, featuring a similarly dark, moody atmosphere, deliberate pacing, and layered storytelling. In her second television project and first major TV role, Elizabeth Debicki delivers a terrific performance as a troubled protagonist on a relentless quest for the truth, which earned her an AACTA Award. On its release, The Kettering Incident had generally positive reviews but has remained an unseen, underrated series ever since.

‘The Devil’s Hour’ (2022–Present)
Peter Capaldi in the Devil’s Hour Season 2.Image via Prime Video
A British thriller series created by Tom Moran, and starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, The Devil’s Hour follows the story of Lucy Chambers (Raine), a troubled social worker who wakes up every night between 3 am and 4 am, the titular hour, and experiences terrifying visions. When Lucy finds herself drawn to solving a series of grisly local murders using her visions, she seeks the help of a mysterious criminal, Gideon Shepherd (Capaldi), who claims to have memories of the future. Nikesh Patel, Alex Ferns, Meera Syal, and Barbara Marten play various other roles. The Devil’s Hour is a dark, twisted, and disturbing thriller that defies genre, blending psychological thriller, supernatural horror, and crime mystery elements. Presented through a slow-burn narrative, the story’s suspense unfolds slowly, drawing the audience in one episode at a time and leaving them on the edge of their seat until the last possible moment. The show has been quite well-received by critics, earning acclaim for Capaldi’s haunting performance and his powerful chemistry with Raine, but despite that, The Devil’s Hour still hasn’t found as large an audience as it deserves.
