My Hero Academia’s Most Controversial Mistake Was Doing This Student So Dirty

My Hero Academia is one of the most popular modern shōnen narratives, earning its place with memorable characters, intense battles, and emotionally charged undercurrents. With the anime having wrapped up the main story, all that’s left is the epilogue, sharing insights into Class 1-A’s hero rankings post-time skip. Some characters earned places among the top ten on the Hero Billboard Chart; however, one of these characters was given a ranking that completely ignores every moment of growth throughout the series. The ranking for this character feels like an afterthought and a dismissal of their development, essentially undercutting the character’s arc.
My Hero Academia’s Epilogue Shared Class 1-A’s Hero Rankings

My Hero Academia Deku volume 42 epilogue

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, the anime for My Hero Academia reached its finale after nearly a decade, bringing one of the most influential modern shōnen series to a close. However, fans of the series have cause for excitement following the announcement of a special episode titled “More” at Jump Festa. This episode will be released exclusively on Crunchyroll on May 2, 2026, and will cover the series’ epilogue. This addition closes up the story, answers lingering questions, and reveals the official ranking of Class 1-A, offering deeper insights into their careers after graduating from U.A. High. Many fan favorites achieved high ratings, including several who landed in the top ten: Shoto Todoroki at 2nd place, behind Mirio Togata and Lemillion; Deku at 4th place after returning to hero work; and Mezo Shoji at 9th place. However, one character ranking stood out for a completely different reason. Minoru Mineta is revealed to be ranked 108th on the Hero Billboard, coming in dead last by a significant margin among his classmates and outside the top 100 entirely. While his character may not be a fan favorite, ranking him so low completely dismisses and overlooks his character arc.
Mineta Sits at the Bottom of His Class in the Hero Rankings

Mineta’s placement at 108th is difficult to miss and stands out specifically as a joke by series creator Kohei Horikoshi. Fans know that Mineta is the shortest student in Class 1-A, canonically measuring at 108 centimeters, meaning that his placement at 108th place was a deliberate gag to poke fun at his character. Due to that, audiences know that Mineta’s placement is far from incidental. Whereas other characters’ rankings seem to be reflections of their professional standing and societal recognition, Mineta’s rank is closely tied to his physical appearance, making it more commentary than a true evaluation of his character. While humor has always been a defining trait of Mineta’s role in the series, reducing his post-war and post-time skip ranking to a numerical joke flattens his journey and the many times he has proven himself. While he may not ever be a high-ranking hero, his placement in the rankings sidesteps many of his accomplishments.
Mineta Had a Lot of Growth Throughout My Hero Academia

Mineta challenges All for One by throwing one of his hairballs.

From early on in the series, Mineta was shown to be a rather intelligent and resourceful student. Academically, he ranked 9th in his class, placing him among the top half of a group already known to be filled with exceptional talent. This was one of the first pieces of evidence that Mineta is an intelligent character. Paired with his contributions to combat, fans have witnessed over the course of the series that Mineta relies on positioning, timing, and situational awareness to overcome obstacles, a trait that was demonstrated during the USJ attack, the U.A. Sports Festival, and defeating Ms. Midnight during an exam. Mineta has also proven himself to be highly loyal to his classmates and friends. During the Joint Training arc against Class 1-B, Mineta prioritized saving Mina Ashido when she was about to get struck. Later, when Deku isolated himself as a vigilante, Mineta was one of the characters who most urged him to return. However, his most defining moment was in the Final War, when Mineta confronted All For One and pleaded with him not to take Tokoyami’s quirk, offering his own quirk in exchange. The act was one driven by pure selflessness and courage, and is arguably the moment Mineta cements himself as a genuine hero in the series.
Mineta May Not Be The Best Character, But He Doesn’t Deserve To Be Last

Mineta’s flaws will remain part of his legacy, and the series never fully reframes him as a model hero. His immature tendencies and behavior, particularly toward female characters, prevent him from being admirable, even by the end of the story, affecting how he would be realistically perceived by the public.

Given that the Hero Billboard Chart rewards likability and popularity, audiences know that Mineta will never reach high within the rankings. However, his placement at 108th feels disproportionately low when compared to the merits he does have and the accomplishments he has achieved in the story. Fans of My Hero Academia know that Mineta won’t ever reach the top ten, however, having him outside the top 100 feels too harsh. A mid-tier ranking likely would have aligned more with his character and credited the few redeeming qualities he does have. By placing him at the very bottom of his class by such a significant margin, My Hero Academia reduces Mineta’s journey and refuses to give him acknowledgment. While it’s true he may never rank high or be extremely popular, a rank of 108 diminishes his contributions to the story.
