Apple TV has the perfect Ozark replacement, and it is surprisingly set to return in 2026, just one year after its debut. When it started airing on Netflix in 2017, Ozark was often compared to Breaking Bad because of its similar portrayal of a man’s moral downfall after stepping into the criminal world. However, as the show progressed, it gradually built its own unique identity in the crime thriller genre. In terms of tone, Apple TV’s Your Friends and Neighbors is far less serious than Ozark. It is also not jam-packed with gritty death sequences and relentless violence. However, when it comes to its portrayal of an everyman’s descent into crime, many parallels can be drawn between the two shows. Just like Ozark’s Marty Byrde, Your Friends and Neighbors’ Andrew Cooper only inclines towards the life of crime to be able to provide for his family. What begins as a desperate effort to keep himself and his afloat soon turns into a dangerous double life for Cooper before his criminal actions start spilling into personal life. Like Marty Byrde, Cooper, too, initially struggles to keep his family together. Strangely, though, his crimes almost become the perfect vehicle for him to fix his tainted ties with his family.
Towards Your Friends and Neighbors’ ending moments, it is also hinted that, like Marty’s wife, Cooper’s ex-partner, Mel, will also soon join his criminal endeavors. Your Friends and Neighbors creates its own unique identity in the crime thriller genre by also inclining more towards the “eat the rich” narrative with its criticism of capitalism and the sheltered lives of the privileged. However, its shared narrative structure with Ozark makes it the perfect series for fans of the Netflix show.
Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2’s Release Ensures It Repeats 1 Of Ozark’s Biggest Strengths
In the streaming era, TV shows often leave massive gaps between seasons, which eventually causes more harm than good. Prolonged waiting periods between seasons force viewers to lose interest, leading to gradual erosion of all the conversations surrounding a show. Fortunately, for Ozark, it maintained a fairly consistent release schedule, especially in its early seasons.
